Fescue sod is a cool season grass and is able to stay green all year long, suffering only slightly in midsummer. Fescue sod should be laid in the spring and fall. It is not recommended to lay it in the summer, because it does not thrive well in the heat. Fescue sod can survive the warm climate with the right amount of water and fertilizer. Fescue is not invasive like Bermuda grass, and its rapid rate of germination is useful in helping with soil erosion. Like Bermuda and Zoysia grasses, certain varieties of Fescue are good for high traffic areas.
Like all sod, Fescue sod should be fertilized. Fall is the best season to fertilize your grass. You should not fertilize Fescue in the summer because of it’s sensitivity to heat. You need to be careful when mowing Fescue. If you mow the grass too short, you can kill the grass. If you let it get too tall it can become weak (Tall Fescue is meant to be tall, though). Heat and disease are the most common problems Fescue sod faces. It’s important to water your Fescue frequently in the summer, even though Fescue is generally pretty drought resistant.
Zoysia – Pallisades and Cavalier
Palisades is a medium broad textured, high density, quality turf suitable for home lawns, golf fairways and roughs, sports fields, industrial parks, and highway medians.
Palisades is a medium to coarse textured turf noted for its shade tolerance and low water use requirements. It tolerates mowing as close as 1/2″ with good weed competitions ideally as high as 2″ to 2-1/2″ for home lawns. Palisades close mowing also makes it ideal for use on golf course fairways especially where water availability is a concern.
- Low Water Use
- Shade Tolerant
- Cold Hardy
- Heat Tolerant
- Salt Tolerant
Cavalier is distinguished from other zoysia grass by its fine texture, long/narrow leaf, low rhizome, and high density stolon production. It has good to excellent salt tolerance and good shade tolerance. Cavalier is resistant to the fall armyworm and the tropical sod webworm. Cavalier is intermediate in its growth and recovery rate. Cavalier has been identified by several golf course architects as the future grass of choice for golf course fairways in the cool season – warm season transition zone.
Tifway 419 is well suited for fine lawns, fairways, golf tee areas, and athletic fields. It has darker green color, greater frost resistance, earlier spring growth and greater sod webworm resistance, better herbicide tolerance, and stiffer leaf blades than Tiffine or Tifgreen. Tifway 419 is the standard turfgrass used for athletic fields and golf course tees and fairways across the southern half of the United States.
Centipede is a warm season turfgrass with a medium to light green color. It is a low maintenance, slow growing, creeping grass. Centipede has low fertility requirements and is well adapted to sandy, acidic soils. Although centipede can withstand mild cold temperatures, erratic winter and spring temperatures along with several hard freezes can lead to slow spring green up or winterkill.
However, TifBlair Centipede has exceptional cold tolerance, increased fall color retention, and develops a deep rooting system even in poor growing condition.
